Im Frequenzbereich zwischen 1 und maximal 30 MHz werden kurze elektromagnetische Impulse senkrecht in die Ionosphäre abgestrahlt und nach ihrer ionosphärischen Reflexion empfangen. Aus den ionosphärischen Echos werden Amplitude, Laufzeit (scheinbare Reflexionshöhe), Dopplerverschiebung, Polarisation und Einfallswinkel abgeleitet und in einem Ionogramm in Abhängigkeit von der Frequenz dargestellt.
